Home insurers socking coast: It's not just the hurricane coverage that's costly - al.com: "Some Alabama insurers are charging coastal customers more to cover risks like fire and theft — those having nothing to do with hurricanes — than customers elsewhere, despite no clear evidence that such losses are generally higher here, Insurance Commissioner Jim Ridling says.

Spokesmen for the state's four largest homeowners insurers deny that they are overcharging and say they generally can't break out separate prices for wind and non-wind risks. They note that their rates are approved by Ridling's own department.

'We feel like our rates are justified,' said Allstate Corp. spokesman Shane Robinson."

Legislators to report on insurance progress - Baldwin County NOW - A Gulf Coast Information Source for South Alabama: "FOLEY, Ala. — A.C. Leggett of Riverside Drive in south Mobile calls it gambling."

“I’m gambling my house isn’t going to be hit,” she said, a reference to her homeowner’s insurance going up four times over what it was last year.

It’s wind and hail coverage that would push her premium to $4,000, according to Allstate, her insurance provider.

But, as Leggett notes, she recently found out that Riverside Drive is the highest ridge in that part of the city. She’s not in a flood area. Actually, she’s two miles from Mobile Bay, and the last insurance claim she had was in connection with Hurricane Frederic in 1979 — not over $2,000, she said.
