First Glass Blowing Classes Among the Fall Classes at the Orange Beach Arts Center
Heading the class offerings for this fall are the island’s first glass blowing classes. With the addition of The Hot Shop @ Orange Beach Arts Center glass blowing classes exploring the many facets of glass art will be offered. Students can stop in for a short introduction to the art of glass and have the experience of making either an ornament ($20) or a paperweight ($35). Each Saturday from 10 am until 2pm resident glass artist Joe Hobbs will be available to help you “Make Your Own” piece of glass.
For those ready to take the plunge Joe will be teaching a one day workshop each Saturday from 2 – 5pm, Glass Blowing for Beginners. This three hour class is designed to give beginners an introduction to basic glass blowing. The class will give students ample hands on experience as they learn classic techniques such as shaping the glass, making basic forms and apply basic color to the glass. By the end of the work shop students will have made paperweights, ornaments and vessels. Students can expect to make 3 to 4 pieces, which will be ready to take home the next day.
Other classes lined up for the fall are Mixed Media with Zach Baisden, a six week class on Tuesdays from 9:30 – 11:30am. The fee for this class is $90 and it begins September 1. Students draw upon a wide range of materials such as paper, charcoal, paint, clay, plaster, wax, plastic, and found objects while incorporating various techniques in the fabrication of 3-D works. This is a fun, creative, messy class as multi-dimensional works are produced. Go a step further, experiment with unlikely combinations. Create! You will enjoy Zach's encouraging teaching methods.
Adventures in Colored Pencil will be taught by Art Orr of Navarre Florida. This Thursdays class is from 12 noon until 2pm and begins September 3. The fee for the class is $75. Study with this instructor for who’s teaching resume includes University of West Florida, Troy State University, and University of Louisville. Enhance your drawing skills and add color.
Rounding out the Fall class schedule is the Art of Pine Needle Baskets. Running Wednesday’s from 2-4pm for four weeks. Liz Lehmon will be teaching the wonderful art of basket making using pine needles. Students will complete a coaster and an eight inch basket. Liz Lehmon has a long, interesting history of basket making. The skills have been passed down through family history for generations and she wants you to share the beauty of this ancient skill with you. All supplies are provided. The fee is $90.
