Whale sharks: Previously rare in local waters, world's largest fish recently spotted with frequency off Alabama coast - Breaking News from the Press-Register - al.com: "'We know almost nothing about these animals. Maybe they're in this part of the Gulf every year, and nobody knows it,' Hoffmayer said. 'There's no question the animals are here to feed. The question is, what is so unusual with the plankton in the area this year that it has drawn all these animals?'"
