Oyster reef aims to shield shoreline | pnj.com | Pensacola News Journal: "Storm clouds and lightning loomed late last week as coastal reef engineers rushed to beat the clock on Deadman’s Island.

The engineers worked Thursday to finish installing 154 oyster reef units along the northern face of the island before today’s deadline. This week marks the beginning of the migration of Gulf sturgeon, a threatened species of fish. The sturgeon travel from East Bay through Pensacola Bay to spawn between September and May. All major marine construction comes to a halt in area waters at this time."
