Small, 68, of Fort Morgan died Thursday after developing an infection following back surgery earlier this month. On Saturday, a crowd of more than 300 family, friends, law enforcement and court officials and others filled the Baldwin County Coliseum in Robertsdale for a memorial for Small.

Baldwin County Sheriff Huey 'Hoss' Mack said he met Small about 30 years ago. Small stopped at the fu neral home operated by Mack's father, Huey Mack Sr., checking death cases for what was then the Alabama Department of Toxicology and Criminal Investigations. Small later retired from the agency's Mobile office, after it had become the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, after about 30 years of service."
