December 8, 2009- Orange Beach— It is that time of year again, time to drag out the ladder and untangle the light strands. It is time to “Light Up Orange Beach” and win a prize from the Orange Beach Garden Club. This annual contest is a hometown favorite. The 2008 residential winners were Todd and Cynthia White (first place), John and Kathy Giannini, Phillip and Connie Baker and Dr. Russel and Mary Proctor. Will these favorites win again in 2009?
Judging is based on several criteria: overall appearance from the street, creative use of decorations, lighting (all working), blow ups (fully inflated) and effective use of area.
There are two classifications: Residential, first prize, $100; second prize, $50; third prize, $25; and honorable mention. The second category is Commercial, condominium and businesses. Winners in this group are eligible to receive a first place award and a certificate of merit. Signs will also be placed on the winners’ property.
Members of the Garden Club will be judging on the evening of December 21, 2009. If you would like to enter or would like more information, please call Linda Tucker, 981-1942 or Merle Carroll, 981-3188.

In 2006, with the help of Mike Shipler, Long published 'The Best Place to Be: The Story of Orange Beach, Alabama.'
'I was born in 1947, and I was almost 2 years old when we moved to our house on Cotton Bayou,' Long said. 'My Uncle Amos Garrett was a dentist in Robertsdale, and he built the house.'

Planners deny variance for smoking porch - al.com: "ROBERTSDALE — Baldwin County planners last week upheld an engineer's decision to deny a Point Clear restaurant operator an exception from setback requirements to build a covered porch for smokers.
The Planning and Zoning Commission on Thursday voted 8-1, with member Charles Cort voting no, to deny the appeal by Tamara Wintzell for a variance from the 75-foot construction setback line along Scenic 98.
The proposed 16-foot, covered porch on the west side of Tamara's Steamer would encroach into the setback area, which was the basis for denial by Richard Johnson, a planning engineer with the county's Highway Department."

Pleasure Island Libraries Rock!
The Thomas B. Norton Public Library and Orange Beach Public Library have earned national recognition for library service in the Library Journal Index of Public Library Service, 2009, Round 2. This system scrutinizes statistics which describe library service outputs – library visits, items checked out (circulation), public Internet computer usage and program attendance. With only five libraries in Alabama receiving Star rankings (and only 12 in the southeast), the community can be proud that two top ranking libraries are here on the Island.
The LJ Index only gives five, four, or three stars to the top 258 libraries. According to the article, some libraries received lower scores than in the first LJ Index ratings issued in February, in which Orange Beach ranked as a 3-Star Library and Gulf Shores as a 2-Star. While a lower index score does not mean the library’s actual performance decreased in 2007 rather it reflects the stiffer competition that additional libraries introduce into the mix. With 7,268 libraries in the mix, Orange Beach’s ranking went from a 3-Star to a 5-Star, the highest ranking obtainable. Gulf Shores performance also increased from a 2-Star to a 4-Star rating.
This second round of the LJ Index rankings is based on 2007 data, predating the recession’s onset. Libraries nationwide “are adapting to dramatic economic changes – static or reduced resources despite predictably increased public demand for library services,” according to the article. Bonnie Lee, Director of the Orange Beach Public Library, noted that “as of the end of September 4,223 more people have walked through our doors than our total visits of 2008. With a tighter budget we are facing challenges to continue the top-ranked services for our community. Among the challenges our libraries face is to continue meeting the needs of our customers in a tough economy, keeping up with and coordinating the information explosion, serving as backup for school libraries and keeping entertainment and enrichment programs alive.”

Orange Beach Public Library Awarded Services for the Disabled Grant
The Orange Beach Public Library has been awarded a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Alabama Public Library Service in the amount of $11,211. Alisa McLeod, Information Services Librarian wrote the successful grant. According to Ms. McLeod, “the project will provide materials for our visual, auditory and mobility disabled community.” Items to be added to the collection include large print books, E-books, books on CD, downloadable audio books and MP3 players.
This grant will benefit our services to the disabled and ensure we are able to supply ADA compliant adaptive technology to our patrons.. The library continues to strive to meet the needs of all patrons. With the recent budget cuts the library is struggling to meet needs in this area. This grant will ensure we can provide services and increase our collection to meet these needs.
