Researchers for first time tag manatee in Alabama waters - al.com: "Working under storm-darkened skies in the heart of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, researchers captured a 1,000-pound manatee and fitted it with a satellite tag Friday morning — the first time one of the world's rarest creatures was tagged in Alabama waters.

Before the weekend was over, scientists from the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, Seaworld Orlando and the Sea to Shore Alliance caught two more animals, including the oft-documented Ellie, and proved unequivocally that manatees migrate between south Florida and Alabama.

'It went great,' said Ruth Carmichael with the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. 'The fact that we were able to find an animal, get it out of the water, get the information we needed and get it back in the water within an hour, that was just tremendous.'"
