Sailfish Hooked at the Gulf State Park Pier
Article and Photos by David Thornton aka Pier#r ;-)
Yep, I kid you not! And it was something to behold!
Here's how it went down.
It had been a pretty busy 'mackerel morning' on the end of the pier but the action had died by late morning to just an occasional hookup.
The east to west wind and current had pushed most of the free floated live baits well west of the end of the pier.
Suddenly Pete yelled out "SAILFISH" when he saw the bill raise up on one of the free float baits about 70 yards west of the end.
I was wrapping a leader and stood up and could see a big hole in the water.
Then this one dude (sorry I didn't catch the lucky angler's name Wink
stepped back from the rail and it was FISH ON!
The sail tailwalked about 15 yards toward the pier and everybody was gawking.
I ran over to the Southwest rail and opened my digicam.
Just missed the next (2nd jump), but you can see the red float that was tangled up in the hooked up line...
