Board still short by $1.9M - al.com: "LOXLEY — With less than a week until the Board of Education is scheduled to vote on the 2010 budget, school officials said they are still $1.9 million short of matching spending to income.

At the first of two public meetings on the budget for the 2010 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1, system chief financial officer Jean McCut chen said that even deducting the salaries of the 205 probationary workers laid off in August, the budget is still almost $2 million in the red.

McCut chen said state law does not allow a school system to submit an unbalanced budget."
