Surf's up: Rough weather, warnings don't stop beachgoers from enjoying the water - al.com: "GULF SHORES — Despite stormy weather and surf warnings, Memorial Day weekend beachgoers braved strong winds and large waves Saturday along the Alabama coast.

At Gulf Shores' main public beach, lifeguards raised two red flags, the most severe of flag warnings, which closes the water to the public. Still, crowds of people ventured out into the surf and were pounded by waves.

Melody Breland of Hattiesburg brought her family to Gulf Shores so her grandson, Kohlton Sharp, 8, could see the same beaches where his mom vacationed as a child."
