Secret reefs will one day be revealed to fishermen - al.com: "Secret Gulf of Mexico reefs sunk by the state of Alabama will be made public in a few years, their coordinates revealed to fishermen and divers. But before that happens, scientists and regulators say they have a few more lessons to learn.
The reefs are large concrete pyramids, 9 feet tall and about 7,500 pounds each.
Using federal money, the state contracted to have 100 of them placed at depths between 150 and 250 feet three years ago at a cost of $1,000 per pyramid reef. The pyramids are placed singly or in groups of up to six to determine differences in terms of fish-attracting power."
