Byrne to resign 2-year college post; mulling GOP gubernatorial bid - al.com: "Bradley Byrne said Monday that he would resign as chancellor of the Alabama Community College System this summer, a move that clears the way for his anticipated run for governor.

Byrne, who served previously as a Republican state senator from Baldwin County, set May 27 as the day that he would talk about taking 'the reform fight here in our system to a new arena.' Asked whether that new arena was the governor's office, Byrne said, 'might be.'

Byrne notified members of the state Board of Education via letter that he would step down effective Aug. 31."
