Local Scientists Monitor Tsunamis - Stennis Space Center Mississippi - WKRG.com: "Last Saturday, the Chilean earthquake caused a tsunami that traveled across the Pacific Ocean. The earthquake was so strong, it triggered tsunami alerts for buoys in Atlantic and Caribbean.

Dr. Bill Burnett works for the National Data Buoy Center.
'This seismic event traveled to the center of the Earth and ended up perturbing the ocean water mass in the Atlantic and Caribbean so those buoys felt that tremor and tripped off line and started recording tsunami data. Even though there wasn’t a tsunami in the Atlantic caused by this event.'"
