Editorial: Nearer to Highway 59 | al.com: "THE SELECTION of a route for a new evacuation highway in Baldwin County demonstrates why counties and municipalities deserve home rule power: because local leaders are best qualified to handle local issues.
The Baldwin County Commission and the Alabama Department of Transportation came up with two different routes for a connector highway between Interstate 10 and Interstate 65. The county calls its route the Foley Beach Express II, and is studying the feasibility of a toll road.
The state route would have run up the far eastern side of Baldwin County. It was opposed by both Baldwin County leaders and environmental groups because it would have run close to the Perdido River Wildlife Management Area and crossed 28 creeks."
