$3.2M seafood processing grant awarded to Bayou La Batre co-op - al.com: "A group of crab and shrimp dealers in the Bayou La Batre area plan to build a seafood byproduct processing plant using a $3.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce, officials said Friday.
The 23 crab and shrimp processors in the Gulf Coast Agriculture and Seafood Cooperative have been left without a local place to dispose of leftover shrimp and crab shells since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
The $3.2 million grant — which was awarded jointly to the co-op, the Alabama Farmers Market Authority and the Mobile County Commission — will pay for an environmentally friendly 12,700-square-foot building to process the waste locally, according to a Commerce Department news release."
