Rare Alabama sturgeon sighting reported - al.com

Rare Alabama sturgeon sighting reported - al.com: "State biologists spotted a rare Alabama sturgeon in the spring but were unable to capture it, one of those researchers confirmed this week.

The April 23 sighting took place just below R.F. Henry Lock and Dam on the Alabama River between Montgomery and Selma, according to Steve Rider, aquatic resources coordinator at the Alabama conservation department's division of wildlife and freshwater fisheries.

Rider said Thursday that he and another biologist were in a boat sampling the river for Alabama shad through a technique known as electro-shocking. A sturgeon rose to the surface, Rider said, but it slipped back underwater before it could be netted.

"We're 100 percent positive" that the fish was an Alabama sturgeon, Rider said."
