Coastal Alabama oyster reef project gets federal grant - al.com: "As part of a federal economic stimulus program aimed at restoring the nation's coastlines, a plan to build two oyster reefs that would block waves and create fish habitat in south Mobile County has been granted $2.9 million, federal officials said Tuesday.

The Nature Conservancy in Alabama plans to build a total of nearly a mile of underwater reefs along eroding shoreline in two locations: near Bay Front Park in Mobile Bay and in Portersville Bay near Bayou La Batre, officials said.

Only 50 projects were selected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from more than 800 proposals requesting a total of more than $3 billion."
