Gulf Shores could be obligated to repay - al.com: "IF HOMELAND Security auditors are correct that Gulf Shores owes the federal government $14.23 million, then the city is in serious financial trouble.
But keep in mind that this is the Federal Emergency Management Agency we're talking about, and FEMA proved itself so inept in the last several years' hurricane seasons that Gulf Shores deserves some benefit of the doubt.
At issue is federal money paid to the city for cleaning up debris and moving sand after Hurricanes Ivan in 2004 and Katrina in 2005. The inspector general's office for the Department of Homeland Security wants to be reimbursed $4.5 million for Katrina, and recently told the city it wants an even more startling $9.73 million for Hurricane Ivan."
