February 12, 2010 - Orange Beach, AL - The Friends of the Arts and the Orange Beach Arts Center are pleased to present the works of Cal Breed of Orbix Hot Glass. Breed’s beautiful blown glass will be on display and for sale from February 19-March 31. An Artist’s Reception will be held on Feb 19 from 6 pm-8 pm at the OBAC.
Cal Breed received a BFA from Ohio State University. He studied at Haystack School of Crafts, Deer Isle, Maine and the Pilchuck Glass School, Seattle, Washington with glass artists Dante Marioni and Lino Tagliapietra. After years of study, Breed opened a private studio and gallery, Orbix Hot Glass, located atop Lookout Mountain in northeast Alabama. In this sanctuary, Breed designs his glass lines. All of his designs pay close attention to proportion, color, purity and form. Each is chosen with specific intention to accentuate details particularly innate to glass. In a word his glass objects are pure poetry.
Breed was featured on Alabama Public Television: Alabama Craft: Tradition and Innovation, an Andy Grace film about contemporary and traditional artists in Alabama. He is represented across the United States in many fine galleries such as Fusion Art Glass (Seaside and Sandestin, FL) Concepts (Carmel, CA), A Show of Hands (Denver, Co), Avventura, (N.Y.N.Y.) and Sandwich Glass Museum (Sandwich, MA). Magazines such as O, Food and Wine and InStyle have featured his work.
Breed’s received the Corning Foundation Award, Pilchuck Glass School in 2007 and Niche Award Finalist 2004. He comes to the Orange Beach Arts Center from Buyers Market of American Craft in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Breed will also return to demonstrate his craft at The Hot Shop at the Orange Beach Art Center for the Festival of Arts March 13-14.
