'I remember we would pick up driftwood and build a fire on the beach. Then we’d eat hot dogs mixed with sand,' she said with a laugh. 'There was a drawbridge at the canal, and you had to (manually) raise it for boats to pass.'

It was a time when careful planning was also a big part of her life."
