Bay Boats with C.C. “Peco” Forsman

Submitted by Andie Mewbourn

Our coastal area is no stranger to the society-altering effects of water traffic. Thursday, January 21, at 6:00 p.m. at the Orange Beach Library, C. C. “Peco” Forsman will provide a brief history and description of many of the Bay Boats that played a vital role in the development of the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. These boats varried in size, design and service. Some were fairly small and carried mostly passengers while others were large and carried automobiles as well as passengers and freight of all descriptions. Some were used for excursions while others were liners running regular routes between points on the eastern shore and Mobile. Some were propelled by paddlewheels and others were driven by propellers.

Peco's was drawn to study Bay Boats through his interest in model building, which goes back more than fifty years and has grown from a hobby to a retirement business. One of his early models was a detailed replica of a WWII Army tugboat which he fitted with radio controls. He has built models for display in the Mobile City Museum as well as many models of particular boats for individuals. He has built models for local artist Dean Mosher to use as aids in the layout and detailing of some of his paintings. Peco is currently building a series of models of Bay Boats for the Fairhope Single Tax Colony. Three of these are on display in Fairhope and a fourth is nearing completion in Peco's workshop. In gathering the necessary details to build this current series of models, Peco has researched the construction and operation of many of these boats and has collected many pictures and anecdotes of the boats and those who owned and operated them. Many of these pictures will be presented through a Powerpoint presentation accompanying his talk.
