Fort Morgan gets Save America's Treasures grant - al.com: "FORT MORGAN — The brick fort may be a well-known landmark, but little evidence remains of the efforts by thousands of Union troops who dug trenches and dragged cannons across the Gulf beach sand while under fire to lay siege to and capture the site in 1864, site officials said.

A $150,000 federal-local grant will allow Fort Morgan officials to show visitors some of what Union troops did to overcome the Confederate defenses after the Battle of Mobile Bay, according to Alabama Historical Commission officials.

The grant is part of the Save America's Treasures program of the National Park Service, said John Greene, communications coordinator for the Alabama Historical Commission. Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Mobile, sponsored the grant."
