Mardi Gras grows more intense with Super Bowl | pnj.com | Pensacola News Journal: "Pirates flotilla

For 15 years, the Pirates of Lost Treasure have entertained snowbirds and locals alike during their annual Mardi Gras Flotilla in Perdido Key.

Like street parades, the flotilla is all about throws.

'People sit on their docks all up and down Old River,' said Jim Matherly, parade coordinator and flotilla co-chair. 'Some of them even bring fishing nets to catch beads. Some people will be up to their knees in the water trying to get them. The snowbirds love it.'

Matherly expects more than a dozen boats, and the parade goes on rain or shine."
