Federal officials propose 54-day red snapper season, shortest ever | al.com: "Federal officials have formally proposed a 54-day snapper season for 2010 that would begin June 1 and end July 24, with a two-fish-per-day limit.

That would be the shortest snapper season ever. By comparison, the 2007 season was 194 days with people allowed to keep twice as many fish per day. Last year, the season lasted 65 days.

The decrease in season length is set against a Gulf of Mexico snapper population that fishermen, scientists and federal officials agree is exploding."
