Only upon reaching the bottom did the divers discover the bodies. Red snapper, amberjack, spadefish, cigar minnows — everything that should have been swimming through the platform's legs — lay dead on the seafloor.
'We had been at one rig earlier that day. It was loaded with fish,' said Will Cooksey, who dove the rig Sunday. 'At this one, I didn't see anything at the surface, so I just went deeper and deeper, all the way to the bottom. It was real murky, so I flipped on my light and saw dead fish everywhere.'"

More than 150 people gathered Tuesday night to voice their concerns, outrage and protest against impending red snapper closures in Atlantic waters. The public hearing was held by the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC).
The 2 1/2 hour-long session drew anglers, charter captains and prominent members of the marine industry and conservation communities from as far away as the Carolinas and Washington, D.C. More than 25 people directly addressed the Council’s 20 attending members with concerns about issues now on the table at the SAFMC’s week-long meeting in Stuart, at the Hutchinson Island Marriott. The hot topic of most of the comments was the pending closure of the red snapper fishery in Atlantic waters. Testimony against that measure was intense, personal and often grave."

Large Amberjack Caught in Orange Beach
June 11, 2009 - Orange Beach, AL (OBA) - Spring of 2009 has seen lots of large fish coming to the docks in Orange Beach and yesterday was no exception.
When Gary Herth from Gadsden, AL went fishing with his buddies on Rookie Charters Wednesday morning, he didn't expect that he'd break his own personal Amberjack record by some 30 pounds and hit the leader board in second place with a 94.8 lb catch. But he did.

Gyotaku Coming to Orange Beach Library

The kickoff of Orange Beach Public Library's inaugural Adult Summer Reading Program was a success with visitors and locals alike. Participants learned about the Japanese art of Gyotaku and were able to practice this art of fish painting on fresh fish provided by local fishermen. "Master the Art of Reading", the 2009 Adult Summer Reading Program is open to adults ages 18 and older, and offers programs, prizes and hands-on creative opportunities. No minimum reading requirements and no artistic talent or previous knowledge necessary. All programs are free of charge, but reservations are required.
The Adult Summer Reading program continues through the end of July, and we will feature one evening activity Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. - Simple Bookbinding. For more information, call the library at 981-2923, or check out our Website at www.orangebeachlibrary.org.

On June 13, the firemen of Orange Beach, along with volunteers and the OBFD Ladies Auxilary will be hosting their 43rd annual BBQ.
Money raised from the annual fundraiser is used to provide the community with free CPR classes held twice a month at the fire department, as well as fire prevention and public education programs for our local schools, day cares and senior groups.
In addition, funds this year will help pay for a new state of the art radio system that will help emergency crews communicate from inside the new concrete structures being built in the community."

The grants, which the city applied for, will be used to pave Rattlesnake Ridge, Campground Road, and to extend Rosemary Dunes out to Highway 182.
“Most of these areas are in generally poor condition. Although they have been used in the past for fundraisers such as the Running Scared 5k race and some bike events, these really need some good, smooth, safe paving,” said Orange Beach Coastal Resource Manager Phillip West."

The first annual Emerging Artists Exhibit kicks off with an Artists’ Reception Thursday June 11th 5:30-7:30 p.m. Each uniquely talented artist graduated this year with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. A variety of mediums will be on display including ceramics, painting and new media. The Friends of the Arts, Inc., a nonprofit organization that supports the Orange Beach Art Center, sponsors this highly anticipated event. The purpose of this exhibit is to draw attention to the works of chosen graduating artists and provide exposure, experience and encouragement.
The Artists are Springhill College’s Matt Carpenter; University of Mobile’s Laura Phillips; University of West Florida’s Daniel Gonzalez and Molly Bowen; University of South Alabama’s Skye Murrill and April Hopkins.

The majority of people returning to Orange Beach Monday afternoon under perfect weather conditions caught limits of the popular red-scaled fish. Many managed to put one or two other species in the box as well.
The dock at Zeke's Marina in Orange Beach hummed to life shortly after 1 p.m., when the first boats began returning from their six-hour trips."

The 2009 Fishing Season has been Great - Today it Gets Better: "June 1, 2009 - Orange Beach, AL (OBA) - The 2009 Red Snapper fishing season in the Gulf of Mexico opens today. Spring fishing this year has already been great, with lots of large Tuna, Grouper, Amberjack and other fish being brought to the docks. Anglers have reported seeing an abundance of Red Snapper while fishing for other reef fish this spring."

The library will supply the computers for use during these classes and students will learn how to use a mouse, how to use the keyboard, how to open and close programs, and how to save your work. 'These could end long-line fishing altogether,' said one long-line fisherman.
Gulf of Mexico long-line fisherman are facing new regulatory proposals after a consortium of environmental groups filed a lawsuit against the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council. The Council is being sued after 21 loggerhead sea turtles were observed 'affected' by long-line fishing equipment over an 18-month period beginning in July 2007 by the Southeast Fisheries Science Center. Of the 21 affected, seven were confirmed killed."

A chunk of that sand was stripped from Park East, just east of Portofino Resort, resulting in the tents and canopies of roughly 11,000 beachgoers being washed away during a typical — albeit strong — summer thunderstorm over Memorial Day weekend.
"The beach is not as wide as it was before Gustav," said Matt Mooneyham, Santa Rosa Island Authority director of development services."

His home is on a dead end street, he is literally surrounded by commercial Real Estate, and all his neighbors seem to love him.
But when he got ready to add a 39-passenger sailboat to his fleet he ran into an obstacle. That obstacle was the zoning ordinances of Orange Beach.
In January 2003, Mitchell requested a home occupation business license in order to legally run his dolphin cruise.
He leased the lot next door to his property in order to adequately supply parking spaces for his business and a his request was approved by the city. Then in January of this year, Mitchell requested another license in order to add the sailboat.
Mitchell’s request went before the Planning Commission and received 6-3 vote in favor to recommend conditional use approval, and it headed to the city council for a final vote."
