Gulf Shores plans berm repair in advance of larger beach restoration | Breaking News from the Press-Register - al.com: "GULF SHORES, Ala. -- With a multimillion-dollar beach restoration project still about a year away, city officials are rushing to repair breaches in the berm before the coming hurricane season.

The City Council voted unanimously this week to pay Olsen Associates about $63,000 to plan and seek permits to cull some 25,000 cubic yards of sand from the shoal north of Little Lagoon Pass and truck it to four eroded stretches.

In all, about a mile of manmade dunes were breached in 2008's hurricanes Ike and Gustav and November's Tropical Storm Ida, according to a report from the Jacksonville, Fla., firm. Two of the segments targeted for repair lie east of the pass and two are west of the inlet."
