An Anglers Account of Fishing on the Annie Girl

Phenomenal week of fishing: "After fishing four straight days on private boats (with Recess on Saturday) I was fortunate enough to be invited to fish on the Annie Girl with Captain Mike Rowell out of Zekes on a 36 hour trip. We left Zeke's Tuesday morning at 6:00 AM. The plan was to head out and put the smack down on some yellow fin, bottom fish and hopefully pick up a Marlin. I had to convince one of the newbies that he needed to leave his bannans on the dock, first crisis avoided. We pick up several hundred live baits thanks to our deck hand Nick.

We left the pass and were met with seas less than one foot. We head South and pick up 10 AJ's on our first spot in about 25 minutes. Lets just say that the Amberjacks were very willing to take an ice bath. Captain Mike has a meeting with the crew to see if we want to make a change in plans since no one was catching much around Horn mountain or the Deep Water Natluis. We decide to go to the Southwest in search of better water. At 16.8 knots we were in for a long ride but we had high hopes and boy were we ever rewarded. Finally after being in green water with no life we get into cobalt blue water. We pull up to a rig that was 20 miles short of our destination and put lines in.

It doesn't take long to figure out that we don't need to go any further. Bait is running on the upcurrent side of the rig and yellow fin are starting to roll everywhere. After a few laps with only a small skippy to show for our efforrs we pull the lines in and try to kite fish but there just wasn't enough wind so we decide to get a chunk line going. It wasn't long before it was non stop action for the next six hours. I'll just let the pictures do the talking now.

First Tuna hooked up most were caught on penn 50 wides. The water color was amazing you could see at least 50 feet down."

Stabler and me, 30 years later | The Press Democrat | Santa Rosa, CA

Stabler and me, 30 years later | PressDemocrat.com | The Press Democrat | Santa Rosa, CA: "‘‘So, how you doing, Kenny?”

That’s the question I asked Kenny Stabler on Sunday morning at Infineon Raceway, and I had no idea what would happen next. The last time I asked Stabler a question, he responded by using an action verb and the second-person personal pronoun and then walked straight past me on the Raiders’ practice field behind El Rancho Motel in Santa Rosa.

Of course that was 30 years ago and times change, people change, events change people. The dust-up Stabler and I had in Southern Alabama is ancient history for most people and I was curious if it would be the same for Stabler. I mean, after all, I was the one thrown in jail, not Stabler."

Webber offers summer travel advice - UAB Kaleidoscope: "The Gulf Shores area isn’t completely void of the supernatural. It’s also a great place to visit if you’re a history buff, so that’s a definite pro."

Fish farms facing foes - al.com

Fish farms facing foes - al.com: "As federal authorities seek public comment this summer on a plan to establish offshore fish farms in the Gulf of Mexico, about three dozen members of Congress — including Mississippi Rep. Gene Taylor — have asked that the aquaculture proposal be nixed.

'Should the National Marine Fisheries Service approve the plan, it would lay the groundwork for a fragmented regulatory system for offshore aquaculture in the United States that threatens marine ecosystems, wild fish and coastal communities,' states the June 12 letter signed by federal lawmakers, including Taylor, a Democrat who represents coastal Mississippi.

The plan recommended by the regional Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council in January would establish offshore fish farm permits for federal waters, creating an industry in which fish such as snapper could be raised by the thousands in underwater cages and pens."

Bill Nelson has gone too far with oil, gas production rhetoric -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com: "Sen. Bill Nelson has gone too far this time with his off-the-wall rhetoric about offshore oil and gas drilling. Recently in Tallahassee, he said pursuing energy independence by allowing drilling off the Florida coast would convert our world-class beaches into 'industrial waste zones.'

How ridiculous and inflammatory. Oil and gas production has been occurring safely for decades in the central and western Gulf of Mexico, and I don't think you can call Gulf Shores, Ala., or any of the other beaches between there and Padre Island, Texas, 'industrial waste zones.'"

The Other Paper > Cover Story > Looking for an encore

The Other Paper > Cover Story > Looking for an encore: "In 1975, a documentary filmmaker shot footage for what eventually became Heartworn Highways, a cult classic about country musicians who didn’t quite fit into the Nashville mold—folks like Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, big names in the “outlaw country” movement that was just taking hold.

In one of the film’s opening scenes, a bearded, broad-shouldered musician in a Western shirt sits down with his guitar in a big Nashville studio and teaches his band how to play “Ohoopee River Bottomland,” a swampy, country-funk number about “a Georgia gator hole,” he says. He rhythmically slaps his guitar strings while singing in a strikingly smooth, Southern baritone. His talent jumps off the screen.

That man is Larry Jon Wilson, a name that, for most, doesn’t rank among the outlaw pantheon. By the time Heartworn Highways was released in 1981, Wilson had already begun to fade into obscurity."

Red snapper off Alabama are growing faster these days - al.com: "Red snapper born off Alabama today are growing twice as fast in their first year of life as they did in the 1970s, according to University of South Alabama researchers.

The news could have important implications, given ongoing controversy surrounding red snapper, which many regard as the Gulf's signature fish. Fishermen now face a truncated season and strict, two-snapper limit enacted this year by the federal government."
