FWC Initiates New Studies of Recreational Reef Fish Fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico

Fish and Wildlife Research Institute: "In 2009, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Fish and Wildlife Research Institute initiated new studies to better characterize offshore recreational fishing for a group of finfish species collectively termed “reef fish.”

This new research is focused in the Gulf of Mexico and will monitor recreational fisheries that operate along the west Florida shelf. Reef fish include several species of fish that are highly sought-after by both commercial harvesters and recreational anglers. Some of these popular harvested reef fish species include red snapper (Lutjanus campchanus), gag (Mycteroperca microlepis), red grouper (Epinephelus morio), black grouper (Mycteroperca bonaci), vermilion snapper (Rhomboplites aurorubens), gray or “mangrove” snapper (Lutjanus griseus), and gray triggerfish (Balistes capriscus)."

The endorsement of the Montgomery-based BCA, which represents state businesses and industry, could be a difference-maker in the 2010 race to succeed Gov. Bob Riley, who also is scheduled to appear.

ABC rules wine label 'immodest,' bans brand in state - al.com: "The state's alcoholic beverage regulators have deemed a wine label — featuring a vintage 1895 bicycle advertising poster with a nude nymph flying alongside a winged bike — as 'immodest,' and it must be removed from grocery store and bar shelves.

Bob Martin, staff attorney with the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, said the board's licensing bureau deemed the label inappropriate last year.

'It was submitted twice last year, and it was rejected both times,' Martin said. Early this month, however, a citizen sent a bottle of the wine to the ABC Board to show it was still being sold in stores, he said. So, the board's enforcement bureau sent a letter to stores and restaurants statewide, reminding them that its sale was prohibited, Martin said."

Nesting Season Statistics | Alabama Sea Turtle "Share the Beach" volunteer program: "Nesting season begins in May and that's when we begin to see females coming ashore to lay their eggs. They lay an average of 100 eggs per nest. The incubation period is from 55 to 70 days.

Alabama's coastline is divided into several areas which are patrolled by Share the Beach volunteers. These volunteers devote their time to searching for new nests, marking the nests and protecting the nests and hatchlings from natural and, more likely, human-related dangers.

In 2005, thirty-seven loggerhead nests and one possibly Kemps Ridley were identified along the coast. Throughout the summer, the coast was impacted by four named storms which affected the sea turtle nests by inundating them with water, covering them with large amounts of sand, or washing them away.

In the 2006 season, Forty-five loggerhead (Caretta caretta) nests and one Kemps Ridley were identified from Dauphin Island (Mobile County) east to Alabama Point (Baldwin County) near the Florida state line. Only four nests were lost due to Tropical Storm Alberto and a non-tropical storm in mid-October. Many of the nests were adopted through the Adopt-A-Nest program, which provided the funds needed to purchase a new Polaris ATV. It is estimated that 3,603 hatchling safely made it into the Gulf of Mexico."

New rate for those who make electricity - al.com: "SUMMERDALE — Baldwin EMC, which provides electricity to more than 65,000 customers in Baldwin and Monroe counties, has adopted a new rate plan for people who produce some of their own power, according to a cooperative spokeswoman.

EMC's seven-member board met late last week and approved the new rates, which spokeswoman Karen Moore said will more closely reflect the actual cost of supplying the electricity those customers are unable to produce themselves and must buy from the cooperative.

Since last summer, EMC has grappled with how it might accommodate members that produce some of their own power, be it with solar panels, wind turbines or some other form of generation. It's a miniscule number of customers who do so now, but one that could grow as green power-generating devices increase in popularity and decrease in price."

FDA scientists use rodeo DNA in fight against fish switching - al.com

FDA scientists use rodeo DNA in fight against fish switching - al.com: "The fishermen competing in the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo are helping to catch crooked fishmongers who engage in fish substitution — passing off low-value fish, something like a croaker, for a premium species, such as red snapper.

Such switches are fairly common, according to FDA officials, because the skinless, boneless filets of many fish appear nearly identical to most people.

A study published in the science journal Nature found that 77 percent of fish sold as red snapper in seafood shops were actually another species."

Scientists: Fish are grown bigger in Bama - al.com

Scientists: Fish are grown bigger in Bama - al.com: "Texas has its extra-large reputation, but to catch the biggest fish in the Gulf, you have to wet your line in Alabama.

Using Press-Register reports on the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo from 1928 to the present, scientists have determined that fish along Alabama's Gulf Coast tend to be considerably larger than the same species caught in Texas waters.

University of South Alabama scientists compared stories about the rodeo with records from the Texas Deep Sea Roundup in Port Aransas and the Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo in Pascagoula. Those rodeos — which began 76 and 61 years ago respectively — have been around nearly as long as the Alabama event."

Stormpulse / Hurricanes, severe weather, tracking, mapping: "For the North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

1. A tropical wave located near the lesser antilles is producing
numerous showers and thunderstorms as it interacts with an upper-level trough. While rainfall associated with the wave May be locally heavy at times, upper-level winds are not currently conducive for significant development of the system as it moves west-northwestward at around 15 mph. There is a low chance, less than 30 percent, of this system becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours.

2. A tropical wave located about 1000 miles east of the Windward Islands continues to produce disorganized shower activity. Any development of this system will be slow to occur as it moves westward at around 20 mph. There is a low chance, less than 30 percent, of this system becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours."

Fishing Rodeo Angles In Tough Economy - Dauphin Island Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo Fishing Rodeo - WKRG.com: "For fishermen like Michael Pittman, the deep sea fishing rodeo is something people enjoy no matter what the economy is doing.

“People talk bad about the economy but you still see 1000 boats out here every year, you know what I mean, even with the economy people are still going to do what they want to do even if it breaks the bank,” says Pittman. Fishermen have been docking all day with what they hope will be the biggest catch--but it was a bigger challenge getting this year's rodeo together.
