Friends of the Arts: Membership Creates Opportunity

Friends of the Arts, Inc., the support organization for the Orange Beach Arts Center, is barely a year old and yet much has been accomplished in that short time. Working closely with O.B.A.C. Coordinator, Wanda Price, and the City of Orange Beach, the Friends have supported, organized and encouraged an increase in activities at the art center.

In their first year the Friends and the O.B.A.C. began the Visiting Artist and Special Exhibits Series; took on the supporting role for the Children's Spring and Summer Art Camps and the Orange Beach Festival of Art; renovated the grounds of the O.B.A.C.; opened the state's only public access glass studio; organized an After School Arts Program (A.S.A.P) to begin Jan 2010 in the newly renovated art studio adjacent to the main building. Included in the Visiting Artist's Series is the Emerging Artists' Exhibit, which features graduating artists from area colleges and universities. The Art Camps and After School Program provide the opportunity for children to experience visual, theatrical and musical arts.

The Friends received their first grant from Alabama State Council on the Arts this month and raised over $3000 at their second annual 'Light Up the Arts' event. Wintzell's Restaurant designated F.O.A. as recipients of their Grand Opening proceeds. Early in 2009, the Tip Seas fundraiser started the year off with a nod from local businesses. It has been a very busy year but do not expect things to slow down. The Friends still have many projects up their sleeves.

Community support is vital to the growth and development of the art center. The Orange Beach Arts Center is a place not only for the community to experience art in many different forms but also for the entire country. Having the state's only public access glass blowing studio, The Hot Shop, has put our art center on the map. The Friends intend to use this attention to bring more interesting and exciting art projects to Orange Beach.

With your support, we can co-create an ever-improving artistic environment for children and adults. Joining F.O.A. is easy: just go to www.orangebeachartcenter.com, click "Be a Friend" and follow the instructions. Credit cards are accepted. Alternatively, simply call 251.981.2787. Become a fan of Friends of the Arts, Inc. on Facebook and receive reminders of upcoming events. Remember, membership creates opportunity.

Parades planned for Saturday in south Alabama, Mississippi | al.com: "Saturday, plan on clearing the streets (and in at least one case, the waterways). They’re going to belong to Santa.

Mobile’s annual Christmas & Holiday Parade is scheduled to roll at 1:30 p.m. -- though on a different route than the one originally announced. Meanwhile, from Ocean Springs to Orange Beach, a number of parades postponed by last weekend’s storms also will take place around the region.

The Wharf (Orange Beach) — The 2nd Annual Gulf Coast Area Christmas Parade takes place at 4 p.m., featuring “floats, marching bands, local personalities and holiday cheer.” Children can have their photos taken with Santa before the parade, starting at 1 p.m., and after the parade. Traffic decline forces Orange Beach to borrow millions to meet obligations to toll bridge owners | Breaking News from the Press-Register - al.com: "ORANGE BEACH, Ala. -- Traffic on the Beach Express toll bridge is on pace to fall for the third straight year, putting the city's taxpayers in a pinch and forcing them to borrow millions of dollars to meet their obligations in a revenue-sharing pact with the span's owners.

Nearly 250,000 cars would have to cross the Intracoastal Waterway this month to meet last year's traffic count of 2.5 million. But more importantly, it would take more than a million trips -- the equivalent of three busy summer months plus one December -- to generate the returns the city needs to match the $1.2 million it pays the owners each January."

Endangered Alabama beach mouse recovers, slowly - Animal News: Animal Planet

Endangered Alabama beach mouse recovers, slowly - Animal News: Animal Planet: "When it comes to rare and endangered species, charismatic megafauna – including the big and scary, or alternatively, cute and cuddly – get the most press, but thousands of less “exciting” plants and animals still vie for attention. So it is with the federally endangered Alabama Beach Mouse (Peromyscus polionotus ammobates), a subspecies of “old field mouse” that lives in coastal sand dunes. I studied small mammals – as mice and rats are affectionately known to ecologists – for my Master’s and undergraduate research, so I’m partial to little furry rodents, but I can bet a pretty penny you most likely haven’t heard of this species unless you live in the state of Alabama. In all the world, this endangered critter lives only in the rolling white sand dunes on a sliver of habitat along Alabama’s coastline, incorporating the area known as the Alabama Gulf Shores. Who even knew Alabama had coastline, right? "
