The Associated Press: Hurricane season ends with barely a whimper

The Associated Press: Hurricane season ends with barely a whimper: "SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Atlantic hurricane season ended Monday with barely a whimper: Not a single hurricane came ashore in the United States.
Since June, when the season began, just nine named storms developed. Only three of them became hurricanes, and those stayed out at sea or weakened before passing over land.
Two tropical storms made landfall in the U.S., causing little more than rain and some beach erosion.
'We had a great, great year,' said Chris Vecsey, a salesman at Top Gun Tackle in Orange Beach, Ala., near where Tropical Storm Ida slogged ashore in November. 'Last year we had Gustav and Ike and a couple of other storms that didn't even hit here. And with all the hype, it ruined us. It just didn't happen this year.'"

Slight rise in revenue predicted for 2010 - al.com: "GULF SHORES — Municipal financial planners anticipate a modest increase in revenue in 2010 that should enable the city to put away nearly $1.1 million in reserve, according to a preliminary budget proposal.

For the past year, city officials have trimmed expenses — including cutting 29 jobs — in the face of declining tax revenue and a sharp drop in development-related income. The 2010 budget proposal shows that the belt-tightening will continue despite the expectation of slightly higher income."

It wasn’t one of the NFL teams or a Fortune 500 company that often calls on Andrews to come in and rev up their players or sales reps. Recently formed, iM (Island Men) is the brainstorm of Orange Beach United Methodist Church Pastor’s Assistant Jonathan Langston and Orange Beach Police Officer Jay “Packy” Dempsy. The purpose of the gathering is to allow local men to come together on a regular basis to connect with each other and to seek God’s guidance in their lives. Alliance between charter boat captains, fishermen fraying as red snapper deadline looms | Breaking News from the Press-Register - al.com: "As the congressionally mandated deadline to end overfishing of red snapper by 2010 approaches, the longtime alliance between charter boat captains and recreational fishermen against the Gulf's commercial fleet is in danger of splintering.

Each recreational group suspects the other of catching more than its fair share of their collective 2.5 million-pound snapper quota in 2009.

Part of the problem, say federal officials, is that no one can definitively say how many fish the private recreational fishermen landed, as they don't report their catch like commercial anglers and some charter boats do. Now, a group of charter captains is pushing to be regulated the same way commercial fishermen are, meaning a 'catch share' system."
