First novel H1N1 influenza cases confirmed in Baldwin, Colbert and Dale counties

The Alabama Department of Public Health has confirmed its first novel H1N1 influenza cases in Baldwin, Colbert and Dale counties. As of May 29, there are 85 confirmed and 9 probable cases of novel H1N1 influenza in the state. No deaths have been associated with the virus in Alabama.

Counties and numbers of confirmed novel H1N1 cases which have been reported in their
residents are as follows: Madison, 35; Montgomery, 8; Etowah, 7; Coffee, 6; Jefferson, 5; Shelby, 4; Lee, 4; Limestone, 2; Mobile, 2; Pike, 2; Baldwin, 2; Blount, 1; Colbert, 1; Dale, 1; and county to be determined, 5. The onset of the patients’ symptoms occurred between April 20 and May 25.

The ages of those affected range from 7 weeks to 45 years. Fifty-four of the state’s 85 confirmed cases are in children under 13 years of age. The median age of cases has increased to 10.5 years. Thanks to new laboratory equipment and a decline in the number of novel H1N1 influenza samples submitted, a backlog has been cleared.

The symptoms of novel H1N1 influenza are similar to the symptoms of traditional influenza and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with novel H1N1 influenza. Close associates are advised to limit their contact with others for a period of seven days from the time they were exposed.

The incubation period from the moment of exposure to novel H1N1 influenza until symptoms develop is two to seven days. Individuals are infectious to others one day before until seven days after symptoms develop. Persons who develop symptoms of respiratory illness should contact their medical provider.

The department Web site at http://adph.org/H1N1Flu/ provides regular updates of case counts of novel H1N1 influenza within the state.

900-pound fox guarding henhouse of Alabama government? - Birmingham News Commentary - al.com: "Posted by Randy McKinney May 31, 2009 2:02 AM

This is a fictional story about a fox and a dysfunctional henhouse, or, let's say, a dysfunctional state government. In order to accomplish the dysfunctional objective, the fox needs three things: money, power and control.

First, the money. A constant funding source, preferably from union members not paying attention to what is done with the funds they so blindly hand over. If the members knew, most of them would be morally outraged. They would find their union's methods and actions reprehensible. So, constant access to large amounts of union funds would be ideal."

Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire mull joint album | Entertainment | Reuters: "DETROIT (Billboard) - After several years of touring together and a new joint charity single, Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire are contemplating a full-scale collaborative album project.

'Both bands kind of separately and together said, 'Wouldn't it be great to do an album together, so that's something that's just kind of flying around,' Chicago's Robert Lamm told Billboard.com. 'I think the guys that write (songs) are thinking that could possibly be the next project.'

Lamm predicted that a Chicago-EWF album 'would sound big. It obviously has to genetically reflect where the two bands are coming from sonically and writing-wise, but I'm hoping that something new could emerge, something modern, something contemporary that the sum of the two bands is greater than that, so that's my fantasy of what it could be.'

In conjunction with their 2009 summer tour, which kicks off June 5 in Orange Beach, Alabama, the two groups put together a special set of songs for download, with proceeds going to World Hunger Year. Chicago recorded a version of EWF's 'I Can't Let You Go,' while EWF covered Chicago's 'Wishing You Were Here.' The two bands then collaborated on a new EWF-composed song, 'You.'"

Andalusia Star-News | These are memories to savor: "A few days ago I found a menu from the Gulf State Park Resort Restaurant in Gulf Shores. Back when I picked it up from a lobby display at the resort, I never realized that I’d look upon it so fondly years later.

As you know, that facility was destroyed by a hurricane some time ago. There are only the memories to savor. Many a time, my husband and I walked down the hall from the lobby to the cafeteria, sometimes stopping to admire paintings by local artists. When the hostess greeted us at the restaurant entrance, we always asked for a table close to the windows. Enjoying the view of the beautiful white sand with sea oats flapping in the breeze, and the green waters of the Gulf of Mexico enhanced our dining pleasure. Sea gulls flew overhead. We often saw pelicans sweep down to dive for their seafood feasts. It was so serene and relaxing. I felt blessed and contented there."

Officials agree on benefits package - al.com: "ORANGE BEACH — With the second Turquoise Place condo tower nearing completion, its developer and city officials have reached an agreement on the package of property and cash that will be given to the public in exchange for the zoning that accommodated the 300-foot-plus structures.

Under the agreement, developer Larry Wireman will give the city nearly 6.5 acres on Cotton Bayou's southern shore, a 90-foot-wide public beach access on the west side of the towers, and $400,000 for capital improvements.

The council isn't likely to vote to approve the deal for two weeks after tabling the matter at its Tuesday meeting. The developer and his lawyer asked that it be delayed while minor issues regarding legal descriptions of the property and easements are worked out, said Vince Lucido, an engineer who is working for Wireman."

It begins with an account of the author's own life story -- how he was penniless, living under a pier in Orange Beach, Alabama after losing his mother to cancer and his father in an auto accident, only to find the inspiration to turn his life around and become the best-selling author of The Traveler's Gift.

That part is true."

Gulf hotel maintenance in legislation - WAAYTV.com - Huntsville, Alabama - News Weather, Sports |: "GULF SHORES, Ala. (AP) - Newly passed legislation says Baldwin County and some cities in the county must negotiate with the state to pay maintenance costs for a planned hotel and convention center in Gulf State Park.

Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon says no money is being put away for maintenance because the hotel hasn't been built. Foley Mayor John Koniar also says it doesn't make sense to negotiate about maintenance costs until the hotel is operating."
