Gulf of Mexico oil spill: Government ramps up response | al.com: "MOBILE, Ala. -- The federal government ramped up its response to the massive oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday even as an environmental group declared the spill has become the largest in U.S. history.

Workers fought rough seas to lay more than 36,000 feet of oil-absorbent boom off the Alabama and Mississippi coasts. But much of the work was limited by the inclement weather that forced several ships back to shore, officials said."
