After going into a closed session for about 15 minutes to discuss personnel matters, the Elberta Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to hire Joey Brown as a temporary replacement for Gary Peaden. Peaden's last day as chief was Monday after he submitted his resignation two weeks ago. The council also voted to continue advertising the vacancy for another month.
Mayor Marvin Williams said Brown will do a good job until a permanent chief can be hired."

Winners of 2009 Island Poetry Contest Announced
The 4th annual Island Poetry Contest ended successfully with 162 participants. The contest was sponsored by the Gulf Shores (Thomas B. Norton) and Orange Beach Public Libraries and their Friends organizations. The contest was open to all students in kindergarten through 12th grades that are patrons of the Island libraries. Certificates and prizes were awarded to the authors of the winning entries. Orange Beach Public Library Children’s Librarian Patsy Rose visited local schools to hand out awards and prizes and meet some of the young poets. Poems were accepted in any poetic form and were judged based on theme development, creative use of language, and appeal to the senses. The prizes were awarded at each grade in the amount of $50 for first prize, $35 for second prize and $25 for third prize.
